Guild of Saynt Luke - Medieval Printed Replicas

Sources

There is a wealth of surviving printed material out there, whilst no doubt a fraction of the original amount there is nevertheless a diversity that is not often found in the usual books on the subject. And in my desire to reproduce originals I look for rarely seen works to recreate, an example of this is The Madonna as Queen of Heaven, this wonderful image was found in a 1925 auction catalogue and is dated at approximately 1440, which in terms of printed single sheets is rare indeed. Unfortunately the whereabouts of the original is as yet unknown to me.

In order to widen the range I also recreate known themes from existing materials an example would be the St Barbara and St Catherine, I remodelled the bodies from related images and used the tower and wheel elements from contemporary regional works to keep faith with the style.

I also draw upon existing written works of the 1450s to 1480s to produce a range of items including: demands for payment, valentines letters, news, receipts, prayers and vows.
